Heat Exhaustion Heat ExhaustionHeat Exhaustion is a very serious matter for humans and animals, especially for us canines who overheat at a more rapid rate than our human counterparts.Over-exposure to the sun, waiting in a heated automobile for too long, having long hair or a black coat makes us more susceptible to heat exhaustion, as well as being a puppy or an older canine. When we pant excessively we are trying to cool our body temperature, sometimes we are unable to do an adequate job and require human intervention! Rolled down windows do not offer sufficient cooling when the temperatures are hot. If the air conditioner is not running, we may require a much cooler air conditioned room!If we become ill with nausea and diarrhea, immediately place us in a cool room and apply cool cloths to our bodies to bring our temperature down. Watch for flushing and redness of our ears, this is an indication of heat exhaustion! Provide us with plenty of fresh cold water and remove us to a shady area or cool room. Remember, heat exhaustion can quickly lead to heat stroke with symptoms of disorientation, confusion, lethargy, and drooling; rapid heart beat, refusal to drink, rectal bleeding, and loss of consciousness. Immediately rush us to the Vet, but cover our bodies with cool cloths or hose us down with cool water before placing us in an air conditioned vehicle en-route to the Vet! Heat stroke can cause blood clots and lasting organ damage...ouch!
